Avenida Guadalupe

Early in the 1900’s Avenida Guadalupe was the commercial and cultural heart of San Antonio’s Mexican-American population.

A decade of severe neglect by the private and public sectors led to the Avenida neighborhood, one of San Antonio’s most deprived and physically damaged areas. As the 1980s approached, in response to this, a Master Plan was developed under the guidance of the Avenida Guadalupe Association by residents along with businessmen and residents of officials from the City of San Antonio in collaboration with the San Antonio Development Agency. This resulted in the development of a 3.5 blocks Urban Renewal Project developed to improve the situation and encourage physical as well as economic and cultural rejuvenation to enhance the capacity of the neighborhood to play its historical role as a neighborhood in San Antonio.

The project included the restoration of the Guadalupe Theater as a Center for Mexican-American Arts. The structure’s construction was financed by industrial bonds issued by six regional banks. Theatre owner, developer, and owner William Schlansker intended to lease the building to the City of San Antonio. The latter is the current owner of the building run through the Guadalupe Cultural Arts Center. The renovation project also included the restoration of the façade of the Lady of Guadalupe Church and Shrine on 1321 El Paso Street. A1 Water & Mold Removal San Antonio
