San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a National Historical Park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving five of the Spanish frontier missions located in San Antonio, Texas, USA. These outposts were founded through Catholic religious orders to promote Christianity among the natives. They were part of a colonization scheme that spanned all of the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18thand 19th centuries.
In the order of geography, beginning from the northern (upstream of the San Antonio River) to the south (downstream), the missions include Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, Mission Concepcion, as well as Mission Espada. Its Espada Aqueduct, which is also part of the Park, is located the to the east of Mission San Juan, across the river.
We’re Still Here: San Antonio Mission Descendant Stories
“We’re Still Here: Mission Descendant Stories” introduces names to oral histories and the memories of descendants of missionaries living in San Antonio. The exhibit highlights families who have strong connections to the missions. They make the missions an active community. The descendant families are an array of Texans with a mix of Indigenous, Latino, and European heritage. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park conserves and safeguards architectural archeological, landscape, and archaeological elements that show a complicated intertwining of cultures in this particular community. The park is also the sole UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.
Guided Programs
Guided Walks at Mission San Jose
A guided walk-through by a ranger of Mission San Jose is an excellent way to understand the mission’s history and the history of San Antonio. The walks can be guided by a ranger between 10:00 am, and 11:00 am each day. They start from the Visitor Center. The walks last approximately 45 minutes. All of the walks will be made of asphalt.
Ranger-Led Talks
Talks by rangers on the grounds of Mission San Jose are offered at 2:15, 2:15, and 3:15 after 3:15 pm. The talks last between 15 and 30 minutes and offer an insight into the nature park.
