San Antonio Mission National Historical Park

San Antonio Missions National Historical Park is a National Historical Park and part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site preserving five of the Spanish frontier missions located in San Antonio, Texas, USA. These outposts were founded through Catholic religious orders to promote Christianity among the natives. They were part of a colonization scheme that spanned all of the Spanish Southwest in the 17th, 18thand 19th centuries.

In the order of geography, beginning from the northern (upstream of the San Antonio River) to the south (downstream), the missions include Mission Concepcion, Mission San Jose, Mission San Juan, Mission Concepcion, as well as Mission Espada. Its Espada Aqueduct, which is also part of the Park, is located the to the east of Mission San Juan, across the river.

We’re Still Here: San Antonio Mission Descendant Stories

“We’re Still Here: Mission Descendant Stories” introduces names to oral histories and the memories of descendants of missionaries living in San Antonio. The exhibit highlights families who have strong connections to the missions. They make the missions an active community. The descendant families are an array of Texans with a mix of Indigenous, Latino, and European heritage. San Antonio Missions National Historical Park conserves and safeguards architectural archeological, landscape, and archaeological elements that show a complicated intertwining of cultures in this particular community. The park is also the sole UNESCO World Heritage Site in Texas.
