Healy-Murphy

Margaret Mary Murphy (1833-1907) was an Irish educator and immigrant who arrived in Texas along with their spouse John B. Murphy in 1849. They were settled in Corpus Christi, where she operated “Mrs. Murphy’s Hospital for the Poor.” Following the death of her husband, she moved to San Antonio, Texas and opened the St. Peter Claver School and the church to African Americans in 1888 at Live Oak and Nolan Streets, located on the city’s east side.

It was the first private school specifically designed to educate African-American kids within Texas and was named after its Jesuit saint, who spent time with enslaved people. The tension and tension caused by prejudice led to the institution’s staff shortage, and Mary Healy-Murphy established an order of religious zeal known as the Sisters of the Holy Ghost to carry on the school’s mission. A1 Water & Mold Removal San Antonio

St. Peter Claver School earned an enviable reputation for its academic excellence and continued to grow throughout the early 20th century. It was transformed in 1970 into The Healy-Murphy Center, and its mission expanded to include pregnant teens dropping out and other young people in need. The organization is still operating in the same place, and the entire area is now a historic district in the local area.
