Dignowity Hill was San Antonio’s first exclusive residential neighborhood. It was founded with the help of Dr. Anthony Michael Dignowity, an ophthalmologist and Czech immigrant who constructed his home for his family on a hill east of town. He named his home Harmony House. In the latter half of the 19th century Dignowity Hill, as it was referred to, was home to famous San Antonio merchants and business owners who built large estates. Dignowity Hill was an exclusive and wealthy residential area in San Antonio due to its high elevation, its proximity to downtown, and the large size lot, as well as the absence of water from the city and sewerage, which forced residents to build expensive water-collecting systems. The railroad’s arrival in 1877 drastically altered the environment of the neighborhood and its demographic diversification. The industry’s growth was greatly accelerated through building an ironworks plant, establishing a streetcar line that ran along Burnet Street (1891), and expanding water and sewer lines into the neighborhood around the turn of the century. In 1914, the neighborhood was surrounded by industrial activity in the north and west, and south, with commerce and modest homes to the east. Dr. Dignowity died in 1875, as did his Harmony House. Harmony House was later demolished. The property was renamed Dignowity Park in 1926.
